Simple Tips for Taking Way Better Photographs

You don’t have to schlep around a camera bag full of equipment or take an expensive photography class to get great shots for your MemoryWeb. Most people can get dramatically better photos with just a few simple tweaks to their technique.

We present these five simple tips to improve your shots.

  1. Fill the frame. The most important part of your photograph should not merely be a dot in the middle. Get close up and make sure your subject fills most of the frame.

As you can see, the first photo doesn’t have much impact because the toddler is so small compared to the shot as a whole. In the second photo, the toddler fills the frame, to great effect.

  2. Watch the background. Have you ever taken a shot you liked, only to realize the background is super ugly? Do your inside shots feature your messy living room in the background? Do you outside shots have your recycling bins as a backdrop? Be mindful of what’s behind your subject and try to keep things as clean and simple as you can.

  3. Use better light. If the idea of trying to make special lighting arrangements for your pictures makes you groan, never fear! Just take your important shots during golden hours: dawn and dusk. If it’s the middle of a sunny day, try to shoot in the shade. You can also simple angle your subjects so the light source is to the side or behind them.

  4. Let your camera help you. So many of us use our phones to capture most of our shots. After all, the best camera is the one you have with you. Take a moment to let your camera help you get your shot. Tap the screen to set exposure and focus. Play around with manual settings if you feel like getting technical.
  5. Take lots and lots of photos! And then notice what works and what doesn’t. Then take even more photos using what you’ve learned!

See? Not daunting at all! Just a few simple technique tweaks and you’ll have a MemoryWeb full of frame-worthy shots in no time.
